The Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit/Paraclete

The Paraclete Sanctifies the Crowning of His Spouse, the Blessed Virgin Mary, as Queen of Heaven -
by VELÁZQUEZ, Diego Rodriguez de Silva y - from Museo del Prado, Madrid

Paraclete (Latin <Consolator>; Greek <Parakletos>), an Appellation of the Holy Ghost. Variously translated "Advocate", "Intercessor", "Teacher", "Helper", "Comforter". According to St John, the Mission of the Paraclete is to Abide with the Disciples after Jesus has withdrawn His Visible-Presence from them; to Inwardly Bring-home to them the Teaching Externally given by Christ and thus to Stand as a Witness to the Doctrine and Work of the Savior. There is no reason for limiting to the Apostles themselves the Comforting Influence of the Paraclete. The Paraclete Comforts the Church by Guaranteeing her Inerrancy and Fostering Her Sanctity. He Comforts each Individual Soul in many ways. Every Salutary Condition, Power, and Action, in fact the Whole Range of our Salvation, comes within the Comforter's Mission. Its Extraordinary Effects are styled Gifts, Fruits, Beatitudes. Its Ordinary Working is Sanctification with all it entails, Habitual Grace, Infused Virtues, Adoption, and the Right to the Celestial Inheritance. "The Charity of God", says St Paul, "is Poured-forth in our Hearts by the Holy Ghost Who is given to us". In that Passage the Paraclete is both the Giver and the Gift: the Giver of Grace (<Donum Creatum>) and the Gift of the Father and the Son (<Donum Increatum>). St Paul teaches repeatedly that:

the Holy Ghost dwells in us.

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

by Theologian, Father William G. Most

Grace is any Gift from God to us. There are Two (2) great Categories or Groups of Graces:

littlegoldcross.gif (962 bytes) Sanctifying Graces,
littlegoldcross.gif (962 bytes) and Charismatic Graces.

Sanctifying Graces

Charismatic Graces

Sanctifying Graces are Those that are aimed at making the Recipient Holy. They include:

littlegoldcross.gif (962 bytes) Actual Grace, a Grace He sent me at-this-moment, to lead me and to enable me to do a Particular Good Thing here-and-now;

littlegoldcross.gif (962 bytes) and Habitual Grace (also called Sanctifying) which Actually does make the Recipient Holy. It gives the Soul the Radical-Ability to take in the Face-to-face Vision of God in the Next Life. Increase in Sanctifying Grace means an Increase in that Capacity - for since the Vision is Infinite (∞), our Capacity can never Reach the Limit-of-Growth.

(Transient, comes and goes)
(Permanent, lives in Soul, destroyed by Mortal Sin)

Infused Virtues and Gifts of the Holy Spirit reside within the Essence of Man's Natural Soul, giving its Facilities/Powers of Intellect and Will the Capacity for Supernatural Acts.

The other Category of Grace is called Charismatic. These Graces are not aimed directly at making the Recipient Holy. They are for some other sort of Benefit to the Individual or the Community. There are Two (2) kinds again:

littlegoldcross.gif (962 bytes) Ordinary and

littlegoldcross.gif (962 bytes) ExtraOrdinary (Miraculous).

Where do the Gifts of the Holy Spirit fit-in? There are Two (2) Groups of Them:

littlegoldcross.gif (962 bytes) One (1) in the Sanctifying Category,

littlegoldcross.gif (962 bytes) One (1) in the Charismatic Category.

In the Sanctifying Category we find the Seven (7) Gifts, which are given along-with Sanctifying (Habitual) Grace.

In the Charismatic Category we find both the:

littlegoldcross.gif (962 bytes) Ordinary Gifts -e.g., the Gift to be a Good Parent or a Good Teacher -

littlegoldcross.gif (962 bytes) and the ExtraOrdinary Gifts, those which are or seem Miraculous, such as the Gifts of Healing, of Tongues, or of Miracles.

The Ordinary Charismatic Gifts are Widely-Given. The ExtraOrdinary are given when and to whom the Spirit Wills, as Saint Paul tells us in 1Corinthians 12:11. They are not Routine today, though They were in the First Generation Church, as we see from 1Corinthians 12-14. Some have claimed that these ExtraOrdinary Graces are Ordinary and were Ordinary for the First Centuries of the Church.
