(Click for expanded view)
This famous work by Jan van Eyck is a huge altarpiece from the city of Ghent. Altarpieces were used by priests as teaching aids during their homilies. The main theme is Adoration of the Lamb, the lamb of course symbolizing Christ. Looking on from above are the Holy Spirit and God the Father, flanked by the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist, the first to recognize Jesus as the Lamb of God. Outermost are the figures of Adam and Eve after the Fall. Angels and a multitude of people representing all nations of the world surround the altar of Christ in adoration.
